Malaysia is one of 17 mega-diverse countries in the world with its tropical rainforest hosting a large diversity of animal species. Yet, there is a lack of comprehensive online fauna database that is available in Malaysia. With numerous applications using the technology today, this product is being developed in conjunction to support conservation and awareness on Malaysia’s biodiversity particularly the animals. In this paper, the development of iZOO, a FRIM’s fauna database will be presented. Collaboration between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) has produced this important application to contribute and assist particularly the researchers, park managers and even policy makers to ensure effective actions will be taken concerning our biodiversity’s future. iZOO is built on Drupal framework and the data is displayed according to Darwin Core standard, the global standard of fauna data presentation. Data in iZOO are sourced from Zoology Branch, Forest Biodiversity Division, FRIM. Currently in the pilot phase, the database contains 50 species of small mammals recorded by FRIM’s researchers. Later, iZOO is designed as a one-stop resource center database that will linked to other the biodiversity database locally and internationally. In the future, more species from other taxa will be added. We hope with this approach, the information will be disbursed to promote awareness and conservation to the public. iZOO is available for beta testing at iZOO BIRG.
